heard from a talented design friend recently that being more verbose with labeling (esp. when starting a new product) is generally a better user experience.

+ you can always remove them once people get a feel for how to interact with the product

This reminds me of how iOS Home Screen removed the labels on apps that are in the dock, the idea would be that you would be so used to the apps in your dock that the labels are no longer needed.
