I thought I'd change this account to a DIY project I'm working on with my dad. It's a steam boiler that powers an engine that runs a generator to make electricity. I thought it could power an eth node, API and website. I'm definitely a novice with limited coding experience but a good machinist!

Well that question was answered, the PI 5 is too power hungry. Here's some rough calculations using chatgpt. I had to modify this many times to get it under 10 watts.

To get the 5300 rpms out of the generator, ½” pulley on the dynamo. For our engine, the flywheel is 2.5". 5300/5 = 1060 rpms roughly. These steam engines typically run at 500 RPMs and the boiler works hard for it. So finding an engine with 6.5" dia. flywheel would be ideal. 5300/13 = 410 rpm roughly

Expanding on my previous post, I believe in the spirit of this project it should be steam power only. Batteries were around as early as the 1800s but not in the form i'd be using. Anyways, for the boiler being built, I found a good generator. Here's the specs:

I'm going to have to do some power consumption calculations. So the question is, can I use a battery or does it have to use pure steam power?

On the tech side of things, I'm looking at a raspberry pi 4. Apparently RAM is not a huge issue so 8 GB seems adequate. On that note though, would a PI 5 with 8 gb of RAM be better? The 16 GB is pricey. The docs are for a pi 4. https://ethereum.org/en/developers/tutorials/run-node-raspberry-pi/

On the mechanical side of things you need an engine. We got a beginner kit from my little machine shop online. We realized that it would not be big enough for our needs but it's good practice! You need a lathe and drill press. Atlas-the lathe that helped win WW2! They're cheap.

I'm thinking of just sticking to farcaster for this project. It's goofy, not particularly useful and has lots of caveats to it but it sure is fun to make something combining two different eras. X is really just old entrenched accounts that can't give up the reach and fame. Though some of that has its merits. End rant.

So a thought has occurred to me. I am a little bit older compared to others in the space. I remember growing up in the old BBS days. It was cool, parents had no idea what you were doing because "computers". You had to wait until the BBS was online and then you had to dial in via modem and phone line. Only one person connected at a time (this I don't miss). It got me thinking...

Hi everyone! Finally on Farcaster. Excited for respectful back and forth conversations about Ethereum and crypto! Mostly to read, as I'll be careful to only add to a conversation.
