I don’t know for sure what happened during the covid shadow years, but a strange thought has flitted across my mind more than once. The covid shadow years made life alien, didn’t it? We were startled awake and all the rhythms that were formerly so cozy - because so assumed and so unconscious - became alien. Our bodies, alien. Work, alien. The faces and garments of our neighbors, friends, family. Alien. The rights we expect, our obligations to one another. Alien.

I have kept silent about this moment for so long. I didn’t believe it myself; certainly, others would laugh it off as delusion on all sides. As the years have passed, it’s become increasingly clear that what happened was a prophesy. Which is personally a difficult word to venture. I am a woman; it feels odd and possibly arrogant to publicly talk about destiny. I am a late bloomer. I struggled with the “simple, natural” things.. My peers got higher degrees, got married, climbed the ladder, bought houses and amassed trophies. My focus was elsewhere - I asked, seeked and knocked and the treasures I received are incommensurable, and so difficult to write about. Yet write I must! For I know my newsletter experiment will “work” - I will find the people whom I am destined to find. September is a mighty month for change. A time for courage and for hidden things to come to light. By change, I don't want anything having to do with the political life we have today, whether in the form of marches on the street, keyboard warriors, podcasts, swarms of donations. I would love for us to pray for one another.

Maybe enact was the wrong word my friend - I agree the practice is not only falling off but realizing you did and all that entails. Enact was meant to contrast with intellectual - theoretical practice. You put in your time on the cushion but you’re reactive, snap to judgment etc - and these seem small things. But for me the greatest challenge is becoming conscious in the moment my reactive emotions kick in. That is the enactment of ones autonomy, one’s freedom.

I often think my work is helping to make the world a better place. Then I get into a fight with my person and am instantly triggered to act like a petulant 6 year old. Or I get on a customer service call with someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing and instantly lose my cool. So difficult to enact - our relationships and all the ways we’re triggered are the spiritual practice, not the time on the cushion, not the mission driven career.

I get chills so many times a day, just thinking about how miraculous life is, this earth, the things we can do with our minds and our bodies. We are each legit starring in the most incredible sci fi film imaginable, in a way that most people cannot yet fathom. I’ve begun scribbling about this in a newsletter, but will try to share more here to find friends who are interested in building together. s/o @dwayne - much love to you.
