Dazed and Confused came out in 1993 and was based in 1976. 

A comparable movie today would be based in 2007

The reason that 1976 seems much more distant from 1993 than 2007 does from 2024 is that the internet has trapped us in a cultural forever-present, unable to move into the future because the things of the past never fade from sight. 

We inhabit a static, stuck, ersatz culture.

This isnt that new though because fashion and a lot of pop culture is replicated after a certain time period to keep the nostalgia alive. 
Sometimes its not that and thats when you get a watered down version of what USE to be a good idea.
