one of my favorite animal facts is that tigers evolved to be orange bc mammals can’t create green fur, but since most of the tiger’s prey are colorblind dichromats for whom orange looks the same as green, the orange and black striped tigers are camouflaged in the tall green grass from the animals they want to hunt.

i wonder why mammals can't create green fur

We just don’t have the ingredients. Mammals produce only two types of pigment for their skin and hair: Eumelanin which is black or brown and Pheomelanin which is red or yellow. Can’t make green with those inputs.
