I don’t hear people taking about music labels taking 85% cut on all music sales and leaving artists with 15%, from which they need to pay for their studio time and production fees, or fleecing artists even more on online streaming, yet somehow Apple is the front page again. Also, if you’re and indie dev with an annual App Store revenue below $1.5M USD you qualify for Small Business commission rate which is 15%, not 30%. For most indie devs that’s more than enough (myself included), since Apple takes care of absolutely everything for you, including being a Merchant of Record which saves a ton of admin for devs from EU. You can think of it as a monopoly, or you can think of it as a trade off to access the largest online market for apps, which Apple built over the last 15 years (not without mistakes and blunders). Nobody’s forcing anyone to build for iOS. There’s always Android or PWAs, but we’d all like that sweet slice of market distribution pie that Apple has, right? Preferably for free too.

Did you ever wonder why 30% of their logo is cut out? That represents the rake.

I learned yesterday that Indigo, Barnes & Noble etc take ~50% on all sales if you sell books in their physical stores. Or sell to a wholesaler which expects 55% off. Amazon takes 15% list as a 3rd party and 50% as a first party. They handle fulfillment etc.

It was a very good trade at the time too to see that number become relevant. It’s a BIG number
