was the main reason for PoS the environmental stuff?

think it was also to lower (solo) validator overhead IIRC

that was a strong narrative talking point at the time. but I think some key players who has strong interested in power and revenue accrual via PoS voted in favor

Non-environmental benefits of POS:
- fixed block times
- Can recover from 51% attack
- Economic finality 
- More capital efficient

Remember, proof of work is just proof of stake with extra steps

The fact that you even have to ask this, shines light on the actual problem.
