My hottest take is we don't need any more protocols written. 

The next frontier is finding novel combinations of existing protocols for good applications.

been thinking about this a bit, whether protocol development is mostly "solved"

idk what the problems are at the smart contract protocol level that have yet to be solved to enable non-marginal improvements in whats possible w crypto

if there is a frontier its probably in defi

spot asset issuance and exchange seems solved though w amms

hooks maybe the final step for unlocking maximum programmability

algostables maybe the other unsolved problem

maybe this is just a failure of the imagination, very possible

they're "solved" in that that existing protocols are entrenched in the way people do things in crypto, and everything else is just built around that. need people to be more innovative / creative with novel protocols
