The Berlin Wall was a concrete structure that separated East and West Berlin from 1961 to 1989. It became a symbol of the Cold War and the division of Germany into two parts: East Germany (under Soviet control) and West Germany (supported by the West). Its main purpose was to prevent East German citizens from fleeing to West Germany. Eventually, in 1989, with reduced political tensions and growing public pressure, the wall fell, marking the beginning of Germany's reunification.
