Many Hindus from the city of Durban (South Africa), who practiced walking on hot coals, wore such sandals - by them one could recognize a devout person. In addition, sandals studded with nails made the feet rougher, and it was easier to walk on hot coals, from which such heat emanated that “the spectators had to shield their faces.”
