What’s the best/definitive book on the history of France? Requirement: Needs to be enjoyable aka not just a dry textbook. Something similar to Mary Beard’s SPQR on the history of Rome

Try Jonathan Fenby’s “The History of Modern France”—it’s vivid and engaging!

I don’t know the answer to that question but on a related note the Age of Voltaire has been a really enjoyable read. By Will Durant. Not a definitive history by any means, but a great snapshot of a really transformative period.
