My recommended crash course on the history, theory, and institutions of money in 5 books: - Ingham, The Nature of Money - Amato & Fantacci, The End of Finance - Kuroda, A Global History of Money - Bagehot, Lombard Street - Mehrling, New Lombard Street Ascent of Money is good popular intro, this is if you want deeper.

How do you have GM instead of the heart? Ascent of Money, of course, is the recommended read.

Price of Time by Edward Chancellor is excellent. Debt by David Graeber is supposed to be a classic but also extremely long and I didn’t make it through it when I tried (though I’d like to).

The Ascent of Money is the best financial history book I’ve ever read.

Debt: the first 5000 years, The Wisdom of Finance, The Future of Money, and the Bitcoin Standard are all good!
