You could read this as just a jab at "gray tribe" or at reddit-think. The deeper criticism is the fish/water effect where many who think of themselves as rational can't see their own ideology. Religious people are at least self-consciously accepting a particular belief system. The ones Karp is talking about are not.

Why the implication that religious people are self aware? Can they not be guided to adopt whatever permutation of sub-beliefs the authority at the podium is serving that day?
