That's an interesting distinction! I think there's something there, but I couldn't find the words. Need to stew on this more.

I would say the AI industry is more power-hungry. They want to control the world. That is a form of politics to be sure. Techno-enabled totalitarianism, singularity monarchism, whatever you want to call it. 

Crypto is “political” in the way activists are “political.” By which I mean, heavily ideological in terms of vision of society and working against the existing system to enable that vision.

That said, you could argue, the way I described the AI industry also fits that description, just with a far more bleak, dystopian, and, as I said, totalitarian, end goal.

Agree on a fundamental level, though I wonder if AI is going to appear to be more political in the mainstream in the coming years.

more subversive the tech is the more the industry needs to be involved in politics

AI is in disguise, while crypto is open about it. Both have a political approach to everything, as what they do impacts society and therefore, it is political no matter what.
