The modern American university is designed solely to destroy your soul. If you’re an American, you should simply not go there—there’s no reason to. It’s not as people advertise that there are no downsides. It’s literately the worst thing you could do as an 18-year-old.

this just isn’t true. it may be for some universities or cohorts more than others, and definitely now, when there are more market based options for youth. but the right university gives you a beautiful life experience and education.

Before I call you an engagement farming *BEEP*, I’ll let you explain. I think immediately going from high school to college could be a mistake for a lot of folks, sure. But education is incredibly important. Let’s not pretend people can just use ChatGPT or YouTube. Neither of those offer critical thinking skills.

More upsides than downsides, to be honest. And that's even with the massive downside of student loan debt. American universities made me a better learner, better earner, better professional, and better human. And it gave me some of my greatest friendships even a decade later.

I dislike how the best scholarships are contingent on *immediately* going to college after high school. It makes the punishment for taking a gap year severe because American Uni is so expensive. FWIW I enjoyed my time at Uni, but I went to a cheap state college and paid it all off while enrolled. College still matters.
