Itโ€™s not a question of warranted or not, itโ€™s positioning. We can both agree X is bad, but if your entire messaging is X is bad then you arenโ€™t really offering anything just stoking fears. If your messaging is โ€œhereโ€™s why Y is betterโ€ thatโ€™s something positive that people can rally behind. Using panic and fear is lazy and exhausting, people are not supposed to be in a state of panic 24/7 but it gets headlines and donations so politicians fall back on it time and time again. Itโ€™s much harder to show what alternative you are offering, but thatโ€™s actually the good stuff. If your entire message is โ€œthe other guy sucksโ€ then at some point people are going to realize you donโ€™t actually have a message.

The thing is Trump supporters donโ€™t actually care about this stuff. Looks at how many right wing Christians are getting busted but child rape all the time. This is totally normal behavior for them so they are into the idea of one of their own in charge.
