One thing I’ve encountered again and again: when someone is presented an idea that very likely they themselves would have come up with, the reaction is most always an opinion of a different idea or an improvement. The need to be different or prove value often overshadows the opportunity for humility, recognized alignment, and momentum. A piece of advice related to this: to recognize an idea you believe is good as is, that is a skill. And to recognize when one’s “two cents” are actually a detriment to momentum, is an even more important skill. It is far more common than one realizes for a team to actually find the critique, and better ones, during execution — instead of through “advice.” After all, wisdom cannot be taught anyways. The trick, should one truly believe there is an opportunity for improvement, is to be humble enough to recognize one’s limitations in communication, yet one’s immense power in creating space for someone else to learn quickly and safely. 0 reply
