Some suggested dishes you can try at most hawker centres (the larger ones are Chinatown, Amoy Street, Maxwell, Old Airport Road, all accessible by the metro/MRT):
Hainanese chicken rice (steamed chicken over chicken flavoured rice—strong umami flavours, a classic, universally-lovable dish; Tian Tian Chicken Rice at Maxwell hawker centre is the famous one, often having long queues)
Fried Hokkien mee (seafood-flavoured noodles cooked with prawns, squids, pork lard—my personal favourite Singaporean dish due to the rich, seafood flavours)
Char kway teow (flat rice noodles deep-fried with cockles, Chinese sausage, and egg—a very decadent dish)
Laksa (noodles in a coconut curry soup)
Satay (spiced/marinated meat skewers often served with peanut sauce—common meats are chicken or mutton; people usually eat them with cucumbers, onions and rice cakes called "ketupats")
