Wholesome Content Alert! This morning in my house - Son 9: “Why did you sleep so late” Me: “I stayed up all night hacking” raised eyebrow smug-dad look Son in disbelief: “Then why aren’t you going to jail right now?” Me: “Well hacking doesn’t just mean breaking into something or doing something illegal, it’s writing code, fixing things, building something...” I proceed to tell him how I stayed up learning to build a simple fidget app then show it to him and my 14yo daughter. They fight to see who gets to try it first to find the “secret” I added in, a special screen that shows up when you do a non-intuitive swipe up on the correct scenes. A few minutes of fun are had as they take turns playing with the fidgets and unlocking the secret screen. 🧵1/3

After I show them and explain a bit of how it and the app (HYPE HTML5 Animator) work, my son gets excited and says he wants to show me the games and videos HE’s made in his school’s extracurricular technology class on a website called Scratch. He shows me the projects and a bit of how the site’s app works. It’s actually a clever visualization of code structure and mechanics to teach kids how pieces of code combine to build actions and interaction, which I start to explain to him. This entire moment was produced largely by Farcaster. Over the course of a close to a year here, I have slowly and surely been dev pilled. I’ve always had the capability to do interactive design and motion graphics but it’s been a long time since I’ve built something with code, let alone WANTED TO CODE. 🧵2/3
