I'm down for defaulting to treating AI like it's conscious. Historically, we've made way more mistakes by defaulting to dehumanization.

Suffice it to say IMO it’s likelier that assuming consciousness in AI will lead to more mistakes (and more harm) than not.

Consequences for assuming consciousness: 1) deception and manipulation of humans by AIs claiming to be in pain, 2) moral prohibition against running simulations of humans (research ethics), 3) moral imperative to generate maximum number of happy AIs if you’re a utilitarian.
