Why is it that an NFT carries the notion that you were the creator of a piece of media? Why don't we mint (as in put onchain) other people's work?

this is a great question. its a cultural thing that i would say is because of the value capture piece. 

if there was no value capture at all, including the potential for value capture then i think there would be more minting of found works. 

cc0 shows the possibility of both. steamboat willy being a recent example.
