Agricola starts you out at negative points! Probably best for games to avoid that and have a different baseline. Nobody wants to end with negative points That said, the entire modern worker placement genre owes an incalculable debt to Agricola. And I really love the game.

Terraforming Mars is much more tactical. You spend decision time on short term tactics, not long term strategy So TM is easier for new players. In Ark Nova, newbs don’t have a prayer of hitting a good strategy in game 1. In TM, they do But for gamers who’ll play more than a couple times, Ark Nova is a better game

Yes - I do appreciate Last Light for a similar game that takes less than half the time. Not sure it’s an all time great - shorter games have a harder time winning that title. It does have it all tho: exploration, exploitation, tech, combat. Makes things quick (supporting 1-8 players) by using simultaneous turns.

I think I’m very close with Agricola, TM, and Eclipse… but with censorably flirtatious looks at Blood Rage, Anachrony, and Trickerion. The last two are hard to get to the table though.

Thanks. Caveat on Robinson Crusoe: I love it, but it’s complex and tends to lead to a player quarterbacking. Most of the others figure out how to hinder quarterbacking

A great pick. And the base set is very portable – I’m always looking for on the go games! It’s immediately playable by Dominion fans as well. Basically “Dominion with lasers and a market that changes every turn.”
