I'm going to say something that's true in crypto that i wish wasn't the case, and have been slow to admit Narrative market fit is more important than product market fit Maybe it won't be that way forever but it's been true for as long as i've been here

Short term, maybe. Long term, no. Narrative market fit may help you get distribution which can help you get product market fit. But once the narrative moves on you need to have something that works otherwise you die with the narrative.

market fit helps with bear and bull market .. but narrative fit seems to only work in the bull market.

You probably wrote this from a dark place… I get it. The success of Bankless is proof that narrative is not more important. When the tourist leave… and they always do. Who is left to push in to the unexplored frontier? Did narratives pull us out of 2019?

Well, that just means “narrative market fit” IS “product market fit”. Not sure this is meaningfully different from many other business sectors.

More important to what? Trading or success? Narrative does fade but I suppose riding that narrative wave at outset gives builders and teams a better base to work from.

narrative market fit is an early stage, helps to build audience and some traction. PMF is next and helps companies monetize, which is important for long term sustainability.

Painfully true.. Bear markets are times to prepare for the narrative to kick in and be there and ride the wave. Richard from Fabric ventures, said... "You can't surf, if there are no waves".

I feel like this take is somewhat confounded by your position as someone whose success is tightly coupled with the narrative success of the things you take interest in. I don't have to explain my choices/excitement to an audience, so useful products are the things my money and attention flow towards.

More important to what metric though? Number go up? Absolutely. Longevity? Not necessarily. In the short term the marketers thrive in this speculative environment. In the medium and long term the products that they are promoting still have to work to be relevant as the hype cycle rolls on.
