I may be alone in this but I hated the presentation of the story. I felt that Leo was heavily hampered by the role he was playing, the relationship between the main characters was wooden AF, and the last act was so rushed compared to this strange build up to everything else happening that it felt stilted as a story. Definitely not up to the caliber of what I am used to from Scorsese. All those complaints said, the technical work in the film like sets, costumes, cinematography was all incredible.

Agree with your observations, perhaps came out with different takeaways. Leo already has his Oscar from The Revenant. This role is him displaying (flaunting?) his prowess to the Academy. More charitably, it’s him making space for talent (Gladstone etc.) to get their chance to shine. Pacing of the crescendo could be seen as quick, but it worked for me. But I won’t claim to be an expert of Scorsese’s work—they call it artistic license, after all.
