Before the days of modern component frameworks, I first got into web dev by extending WordPress themes. Learned a lot writing hooks in PHP, inventing new shortcodes and overriding CSS with unsavory levels of specificity. Today you'd have to learn this weird amalgamation of PHP/HTML/JSON/CSS/SQL to do this effectively.
