yeah, this one goes to philosophy, "does intent matter?". and broadly speaking as a society and legally, it does. Whats interesting is that those that work selflessly are rarely looking for recognition of that in the form of money. It is also a component of credible neutrality.

To that I just say we should at least permit a second category, call it "beneficial" which allows people to be rewarded.

100% yes, in fact you'll get to the part where I mostly quibble with the branding of what they're doing.
