what is design? Design is a discipline of study and practice focused on the interaction between a person — a ‘user’— and the man-made environment, taking into account aesthetic, functional, contextual, cultural and societal considerations. As a formalised discipline, design is a modern construct

The creative design process Problems are best solved when approached in a comprehensive and systemic way. The goal of this process is to guide you and organize your work to turn ideas into concrete solutions. Designers do research and collect information about the problem they are considering: who is person facing this problem? Why? How are other people trying to solve it? From this research, they make a general hypothesis and identify the main features should be part of the answer. Then with these key aspects in mind it’s time to experiment different solutions and iterate. This last part is about learning from what works, what doesn’t to adapt your solution to fit the user’s need best.

The key concepts of design Art or science? While not being exactly an art nor a science, it takes elements from both. Art is about creating something that expresses the author’s vision, ideas and feelings. While designers can express feelings and leave impressions through their work, doing so is not their prime objective. So it takes the creating aspect of art, as it is about crafting an item, a tool, an experience even.

A common misconception about design Design is not about making things pretty just for the sake of it Nowadays, it can be categorized as a fancy sounding word, and there seems to be a certain amount of misconceptions surrounding it. But what is it really at its core? Is it simply a process to make pretty looking things? Far from it. It doesn’t focus purely on aesthetics, nor is it about adding ornaments to an item. First and foremost is it about making the user’s interaction with the environment more natural and complete.

When we say "Design" First of all let's look at a few ways we use the word: A thing that's created, like an artifact or a set of specifications: "Did you bring the design?" An expression of intent: "Well, it was designed to…" A systematic, reproducible process that generates innovation: "Design thinking" or "Design process"

We may choose to get help from a professional, for example if we really want something to be perfect, when we don't have the time to do it ourselves, or when we simply have so much money that we can't be bothered. But, it is first when there is a high level of complexity that we really need to get expert help. For example when the thing that is being designed has a lot of components that need to interoperate, when it needs to work or behave in a way that requires certain material or chemical properties, or a specific shape. Most of us would for example never try to design a car or an airplane, the soup

Design is not rocket science, well actually a lot of design is required when building rockets or even theorising about rocket science. But my point is that design is not something only a privileged few can do. We all constantly design things both in our private lives; for example when we rearrange our living room, when we decide what is to be for dinner for the next family gathering, or when we plan our next vacation, and in our work life; for example when we define the KPI's, we set the OKR's, when we change how we execute a process

I was reading an article about design and it got me thinking about what design actually is and who are designers when it comes to enterprises. We tend to have a stereotypical idea of this. At least, when I think about design, images of diagrams and blueprints pop up in my mind, or a physical product. And, when I think about a designer, I think about an especially creative person, possibly with a very specific personal style and a laid back or a little pompous attitude. But when I started to think about it, I came to a conclusion that is actually very far from this.

Humans speak through languages and things speak through design. It seems today that nobody claims to speak a foreign language they haven’t studied but everybody thinks they know design

What is design? Most people think that design is about making things look pretty – a decoration. Art. But design is as much an art as it is a science. Cold and calculated process. Sometimes the detriment of pretty. Yet, the design is not allowed to fail. Design is for everyone and no one in particular. Website and mobile app design, as well as design in general, is a complex yet subtle process, it’s more than making things pretty.

The verb to design expresses the process of developing a design. In some cases, the direct construction of an object without an explicit prior plan may also be considered to be a design

A design is the concept of or proposal for an object, process, or system. The word, design, refers to something that is or has been intentionally created by a thinking agent, although it is sometimes used to refer to the inherent nature of something – its design.
