Really interesting to see how this one is going to play out. The owner knew for 10 years the foundation was very bad and needed work. In 2015 the municipality placed it on a preliminary list of homes that “are important for the look of our village”, in 2019 the owner objected due to the cost involved to get foundation fixed. In 2019 he stated the home didn’t have a long life ahead of it anymore due to the troubles. Stayed in the home living in it, didn’t do any work to make it safer. And now it’s up to the _insurance_ to see what is next, seems off to me. There is some sort of responsibility one needs to own up to when letting it get this far?

Not sure if you're seeing in the U.S. but places like Florida have a housing market that's completely broken at the moment. Insurecos absolutely aren't writing new policies and you need a policy to get a mortgage. Its for these exact reasons. Homeowners have let their hones fall into disrepair instead of paying for the necessary maintenance, especially in the last 5 years as costs have skyrocketed. Florida especially as its moist and near the water, where even concrete lasts less than 50 years. Honestly, why would anyone in their right mind start a home insurance business? I think it depends on his insurance. It's not gradual, but suddenly so it might be covered. And it probably was unforeseen on the day that they insured the house. Value on 1-1-2023 was € 1.3M (WOZ-waarde), but also a lot of land (965 m2). So I think the insurance company might put some people on it to find a loophole. Most interestingly was that the owner (90 years) was vacuum cleaning to solve the problem. He probably didn't realised that the house was on the brink of collapsing.
