Amazon's market position in Germany is crazy because we have a "Preisbindung", which basically means we have the books for the same price everywhere.

It probably saved a lot of small bookstores, but Amazon still has a high market share.

It's meant to protect the cultural product "book". That way it can't be subject to rebates and a race to 0, but also has a symbolic "worth".

You can still sell it cheaper if it's used, which Amazon did.
