I think I figured out a way to make public transit happen in the US. 

Crack down on banning seniors driving when they shouldn’t be. If they still want to get places they will need to use public transit.

Seniors vote more. So if we just hold the line in kicking them off driving, we can get the transit bills through.

Maybe both? Trains just have such higher throughput than highways. Even with self-driving cars I think you still run into bottlenecks.

Could be more efficient to have a combination that helps with the final mile challenge.

This is a stronger argument for adoption of self-driving cars and not public transit. Doesn't cost government money to build out either

@we has a good point too. But this is a huge issue. I wonder if there is a study on the aggregate negative impact of seniors driving - from insurance claims, to worker compensation claims, to loss of life, to hospital bills to ... all caused by aging population with bad reflexes / eye sight and still driving.
