A bit puzzled by the people who continue to insist that open channels without any gating or spam filtering would work just fine. When I mention there would be a lot of spam, they tell me I'm wrong or they would manually weed it out. We tried that for the last year and it didn't work. Very few channel owners / moderators wanted to do the drudgery of cleaning up spammy casts. It's not fun or rewarding. And that's logical on their end! The reason web2 doesn't have this problem: 1. The successful companies like Meta or YouTube have *10s of thousands* of ops people moderating the platform; they also have massive data sets and AI models to help 2. They are centralized. They can *delete* spammy accounts and there's no recourse. 3. X / Twitter got rid of most of their ops people, so you see *a lot* more spam on there. Additionally, #hashtags on Twitter have been spammy for 10 years. Just look at the following link: https://x.com/hashtag/Ethereum

I don't know for sure, but I imagine these comments come primarily from heavy internet users, especially those familiar with the constant spam on other platforms. Many feel it's unrealistic to imagine a spam-free internet platform, and to be fair, even in 2024, we all still get spam texts, calls, and emails. So, forcing real users to deal with added friction when posting in channels feels neither fair nor justified. The core issue is that the platform’s incentives—through no fault of the Merkle team—favor those posting low-quality content in popular channels, making channels feel like "first class" spaces. This creates a divide between channel owners, developers, qDAUs, and everyone else, the majority of whom simply want fair access to the same incentives.

1. There's no benefit to casting in a channel beyond participating in a community. You can reply to any cast in the channel if you're not a member. Only thing that's gated is a new top-level cast. 2. Power users use the app less when they interact with spam. It shows up in the data. Too many other alternatives that are less spammy (or where they have a bigger audience). 3. > simply want fair access to the same incentives What are the incentives?
