I'm up to 10/40 kills needed to start challenging this guy.. but my life has fallen into 30 minute rhythms trying to get my bonk count up

I didn't understand a word of that... I minted a frenpet when @rhynotic showed them on X but didn't do anything as I was confused as hell.

I was confused when I first started too. Basically you can bonk another player every 30 minutes, if you win you get some of their points, if you lose they get some of yours. After you win 40 bonks, you can challenge the minibosses for extra rewards. Its actually pretty fun

You can scroll through the leaderboards by clicking the little trophy on the explore page, just scroll way back to page 50 and find other pets that have 10 attack, 10 defence and you have pretty much 50/50 odds of winning or something. FP helps for sure, but you don't need it to play

I'm assuming I need to buy $FP as well.
