@ncitron.eth some things we've learned about protobufs if helpful: 

1. Performance is really really good,  much better than we expected (beat flatbuffers in a lot of dimensions) 

2. Serialization is non-deterministic. Huge problem if you care about this.

Good to see the high perf. It's a shame we're stuck with jsonrpc for all things ethereum

reth is supposed to pluggable enough to write your own endpoints if you need the extra perf, jsonrpc is… fine for a baseline standard
