Okay I thought this was just typical media stuff but I just watched the video and it does appear as though Elon made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm

The gesture is not what they're calling it 
It's different

This symbol is an ancient Hindu symbol not the more recent German use, totally different meanings

and the "roman salute" only inspired Mussolini, who inspired Hitler to use it in the absolute same way Elon did (by total accident, of course. Twice). But it's a totally different meaning...
