Thomas Jefferson was an American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, philosopher, and founding father who served as the third President of the United States from 1801 to 1809.  He is perhaps best known for drafting the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which declared the American colonies' independence from Great Britain.

Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, exactly 50 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America - which he himself was one of the founders of this declaration - in the city of Monticello, Virginia, at the age of 83.
