honestly, it terrifies me that I have zero street smartness and that I do Germany-normal but here-silly things like walking around at night alone. I‘ve heard crime is 10x here.

A friend of mine went to New Orleans from Canada for a job interview at a university. He asked the concierge for walking directions and the guy absolutely refused to let him walk to the point where he basically made him get in a cab.

I think the area he had to walk through was the issue. Just a culture shock - I’ve walked around downtown Toronto by myself at 3am several times without even thinking twice.

New Orleans is old & landlocked resulting in a more checkerboard environment compared to many US cities. It is difficult to explain to visitors where you can and can’t walk safely. We also have had a crime spike over last 2 years that correlates to lower police count. Depending on distance it might have been prudent.
