Base & Farcaster both need more counter cultures Crypto needs *intetnal* counter culture We have essentially three major cultures as I see it: startup & milady & zealot Milady = shitcoin traders on sol, rug pullers in discord trenches making memes that Elon retweets Startup = tech people, VCs, people with real jobs at companies Zealots = nerds & ideologues who were here early for strong, intellectual and political reasons. Mission driven, highly technical. There is plenty of overlap, and lots of retail & alt-chain grifters with no real identity in between. We need space for people who don’t really identify with the stuff we have done, but who are down to use crypto for their own reasons. We need those people & we need big culture wars with them. Would be good to see some fresh juice in the system vibes wise

just to push back on this because i think its an important discussion for many reasons; firstly i agree wholeheartedly, counter culture is good. it is sign of progress 1. milady is not the solana memecoin culture. from my understanding of what i pieced together and from what ive heard in gcs, retardio was created by milady holders and just like many derivs that are made by holders it was given support as remillia community but not assets. they've since grown bigger, hence why people assume that is milady 2. VC culture is real bad, totally agree with that. im not sure there's a solution other than integrating and reintegrating users into cypherpunk values. back to basics of dont trust, verify 3. zealots are gone, or at least nowhere near as vocal. unless we're counting BTC maxis, but nobody counts them. most ETH/SOL talk comes from ppl who trade both. I know 1 extremely hard-core ETH head. i struggle to call sol maxis a maxi bc they're that way for profit reasons, not because they believe in the tech

Kinda a corollary to niche communities and cozy corners, yeah? Whatever Reddit’s flaws, I know I often can find a vibrant group of kindred spirits there for whatever my interests of the moment are. Example: I, a no longer young person, recently decided to try longboarding after a decades-long hiatus from the casual skating of my youth. I quickly found r/longboarding, r/longboardingDISTANCE, and r/OldSkaters, to name just a few. That “community on demand” experience still feels a long way off on Farcaster.

I read the whole conversation and keep coming back to the thought that this might mean crypto is more mainstream now. Or maybe washed lol. Tech has moved on from crypto being the new thing. Even my grandma knows bitcoin and I can say I work in crypto to anyone and they get it on a surface level. So my point being is that we’re left with some dominant voices that are the largest groups. And just like in real life, they dominate the conversation with quantity not quality.

Agree mostly and think the shitcoin trader in the casino incorporates milady rather than the other way round Great prompt for a conversation we need to have here. Expand on Tavern soon?

Artists and art collectors use crypto for their own reasons that have nothing to do with the ideals and ethos of the crypto builders and believers. There are also real-world applications that have nothing to do with DeFi, but only care about the immutable ledger & smart contracts. These don’t feel much like counter-cultures, though. What would a counter-culture look like?
