Why have subscriptions (i.e., recurring payments) not taken off in web3?

probably because it's a bit more complex to implement vs a single-shot payment. i.e. USDC.approve (what's a good considerable value, monthly payment * 12?); then a service must trigger transferFrom from an address(es). not that complex but I think it's much rather more mental then a technical limitation.

My sense is there just aren't that many user experiences with traction that need subscriptions right now. /hypersub is working, and it's coming from a user problem/product perspective, not a tech/infra angle. Subscriptions feel inevitable, but IMO are downstream of product demand, which there just isn't a lot of rn

Seems hypersubs of artists are now a thing. Subbing to alpha channels makes somewhat sense too. But imo subscriptions in web2 are also not the preferred user choice (they are for b2c companies though) and have to offer a lot of value to be worth it. B2B in web 2 is a no-brainer for SaaS.

I think that a set subscription price is trivial to implement, but usage based subscriptions are technically challenging to implement as you introduce a source of trust that defines the usage in each period. Making this source of trust sufficiently secure, esp when that source is offchain, requires novel design

I think it’s not really about technical limitations, considering that Alphafrenz and PiChi are actually implementing it. Compared to credit cards or bank withdrawals, blockchain is decentralized, which might make scheduling regular payments a bit tricky. (Maybe it’s possible with apps like Superfluid…?)
