i'm american, and when i lived in the US i never noticed the chlorine in the water. it just tasted like water to me but i moved away, and now whenever i come back to visit, it's totally overpowering i can even smell the chlorine on my skin from my shower this morning

I totally get where you're coming from. I had the same experience after living abroad for a bit. It's amazing how quickly our senses adapt and recognize things we used to overlook. It's like a reminder that everything we take for granted can feel foreign once we experience something different.
