had a chat about this recently (i think w @atlas) and there's a good argument that web3 is far from the final iteration of the internet and it's more like an interim period of rapid experimentation and exploration with tools and systems that are currently siloed or gatekept, e.g. app data and transfer of value

I get *an* underlying point - service providers building on blockchain rails have a UX and customer service gap to close - but if you think handing random sites on the Internet the credentials of your cards and bank accounts is a less-trustful system - brother, let me regale you with tales of my disputes on my cards.

I think this is where instant transaction blockchains come in. For blockchain to take over and improve, we must have better TPS.

The same argument could be made for open-source and Linux: the ecosystem relies on similar principles like transparency and audits, with the involvement of big firms like Red Hat and auditing organizations. However, the key difference lies in the adoption and maturity of the technology.

Only works when you have a trusted provider in the first place

It’s good to be one of these “most” people, but it really sucks if you are one of the other. Sad thing is that in this case “most” is just the western world, and they are the minority. Try paying with a credit card online if you come from a wrong country. It’s a real problem, not a minor inconvenience.

Web3 is as much about trusted data as coins.

Hmm, that's controversial on multiple accounts. Right off the bat: 1. Blockchains aren't necessarily payment processors, and many aren't primarily payment processors as well. Bitcoin (the one supporting BTC transfers) is one example: it isn't optimized for payments. 2. Most tokens are not exclusively payment mechanisms. Tokens may be securities, payment mechanisms, gateways to services, etc. 3. Web3 isn't defined by wallet extensions or websites as much as by the (onchain) contracts that it uses. Unclear how Web2 payment providers require more trust than Web3 payment providers given that Web2 systems are more closed than Web3 payment providers.
