100 warps to the best and most genuine answer to what you think caused the 180-degree position flip of SV tech workers on building defense tech. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/02/17/silicon-valley-military-tech-defense-contractors/

My take on this is that there was always an appetite to work and invest in defense tech but there was a stigma caused by a lack of real conflict causing some people to feel like defense tech was just an excuse to kill people. And wars in Ukraine and Russia have changed this perspective.

1) Real geopolitical tension among superpowers for the first time since '90. Yes we had GWOT but that is different than a genuine, credible challenge to the US global order 2) Software ate the world. The low hanging fruit is gone and hyper verticalized plays aren't that appealing 3) Seeing genuine evil in the world

It was not an immediate 180, but a gradual process over a decade. GPC and the changing nature of war had already started turning both the DOD and NATO towards new innovative solutions that existing large primes could not provide. Successful early VC bets on these trends (e.g. Palantir, Anduril) accelerated the path.

FTX made VCs skittish. The U.S. government prints money and then gives most of it to the military. Easy-peasy, endless money, rest easy.

Founders Fund. Palmer Luckey. A16Z. Money. Geopolitical tensions. Propaganda. Nationalism. And a belief that the U.S. needs to maintain its military dominance and role as a global hegemony.

Defense could very well be the new internet hype and for innovators and founders, the prospects of having a defense company and have it funded, and it has the possibility to protect American ideals and interests, I mean who would not want to do it, if they had the skills, the personnel, and the money. Maybe that's why!
