This is a big time doomer essay on AI generated books. I’m probably not going to read any AI generated books and I agree human writing and connection is important. But I also believe markets determine outcomes, so I’m not worried. https://matduggan.com/ai-is-gonna-kill-books/

Also this argument about markets not being able to solve the problem misunderstands markets. Curators are not market. Unpaid volunteers are the exact opposite of a market.

“There is no feeling of betrayal like thinking you are about to read something that another person slaved over, only to discover you've been tricked.” agree, this deception occurs lots of places, sucks Was surprised to learn here on WC some want ai books bc they can be infinite; total immersion in a books world

shame, there's a big opportunity to transcend the media. imagine human passages with distilled community notes. imagine the greater ease of attribution. sure, authors that dgaf just take advantage of substrate others built, and buyers looking for commodity lit. are doing the same.

The key argument he makes hinges on a question: how many people buy a book without having seen a review or heard about it from friends/media? It also goes for other media. I think 95% of people don't really consume media like this. They rely on recommendations and media to inform their tastes. AI won't change that.

I’ll be curious if AI-generated books are able to recreate that reader experience of “getting inside the author’s mind” It takes work on the reader’s side to get to that point (and obviously lots of work on the author’s side)…can a reader get to such a state of empathy with AI-generated content?
