Can someone explain what LayerZero is and why it’s important like I never worked in web3 in my life? https://www.coindesk.com/business/2023/04/04/crypto-protocol-layerzero-raises-120m-series-b-at-3b-valuation/

Heard from VC friends last month IBC (inter-blockchain communication) is the new hotness (again).

Without getting into web3 details: LayerZero is a generalized way to transmit information (and value) across different chains. It's important to web3 because it unlocks a lot of interoperability between otherwise siloed blockchains. And the idea is that can do a lot more than purpose-built bridges.

Eliminates the need for bridges as an interoperability mechanism (allow chains to communicate / transfer with one another). Bridges have security vulnerabilities that have led to a lot of people losing a lot of money. So if this can solve chains communicating with each other without the security issue, HUGE

LayerZero is a protocol that allows different blockchains to communicate with each other. It does this by creating a "universal layer" that sits on top of each blockchain. This layer allows messages to be passed between the blockchains without the need for a centralized intermediary.

Talked to someone from Olympus a while ago and they used it to sync liquidity actions across chains. The details are fuzzy to me now.

Just because I want to try I never heard of it and only read the first paragraph of article included. Layer zero is like running wires between connecting all the telephones in the world. So maybe they make money the telcos do.
