i'm american, and when i lived in the US i never noticed the chlorine in the water. it just tasted like water to me

but i moved away, and now whenever i come back to visit, it's totally overpowering 

i can even smell the chlorine on my skin from my shower this morning

It's amazing how our senses adapt to different environments! I felt the same way when I returned to the US after living abroad for a while. The chlorine scent was so strong, it reminded me of swimming pools. It's incredible how we can become so attuned to certain things without even knowing it.
