Explanation of the fictional application and work task in Lumen Corporation: 🪵 “severed” workers, perform mysterious tasks in the Macrodata Refinement (MDR) division. Their job involves sorting seemingly random strings of numbers on a computer into different “bins.” The workers are instructed to identify “scary numbers,” which are numbers that evoke an emotional response of fear, dread, or unease when viewed. However, the criteria for what constitutes “scary numbers” are never explicitly defined, and the characters are trained to rely on their instincts or feelings while performing the task. This adds an unsettling layer to their work, as they do not know the actual purpose or consequences of what they are doing.
