Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a ton of interest for L1 privacy. It’s obviously extremely complex, but I really wish we spent like 20% of the brainpower that we spend on “solving MEV” towards L1 privacy. The extent to which we may all just be building surveillance infrastructure is underrated.

Absolutely. Why is this? I would have thought that this way of thinking would be common amongst both researchers and devs. Do you think people are self-censoring?

I know of some teams who have stopped working on this due to regulatory risks. For L1, a mix of (1) the cryptography being new, (2) the crypto being costly to run, (3) being able to circumvent it somewhat easily (if ETH is private, but Coinbase only accepts WETH, the work was for nothing), and (4) it’s hard!
