So apparently Japan changed their money over the summer and I almost lost it at the ATM and had to stand there googling it like an idiot to make sure I wasnโt crazy. Top is new. Iโm loving the wave on the back. Canโt wait to get more change and see what the other notes look like in person. Japan used to be very cash heavy, covid helped accelerate touch-less credit cards but most small businesses and temples are still cash. Itโs strange because IC cards (electronic transit cards) are useable at most vending machines so Iโm always caught off guard when I canโt pay with it and thrilled when I can unexpectedly. Now that I can reload my card with Apple Pay I rarely go to the ATM.

It's okay, even Japanese people aren't used to it yet.๐คฃ They apparently made the font larger with Arabic numerals so that foreign tourists can understand it more easily. I'm always confused because the 1000 yen bill looks like the old 5000 yen bill to me.
