It's encouraging to see how FIP-2 and the product-driven approach to Channels have spurred protocol activity.

But it's still early and we should be cautious of getting stuck in a local maximum.

Are there other low hanging fruit that we should consider? What if we extended FIP-2 further?

Channels became possible with FIP-2, which allowed Casts to form threads by replying to arbitrary strings.

A very small change unlocked a huge amount of design space. 

What if we allowed users to mention strings, instead of just replying to them? What would this primitive unlock?

Extending mentions to include strings (instead of just FIDs) would allow a single cast to reference *multiple* channels.

The mental model here is closer to hashtags than subreddits. It also has the interesting property of allowing a thread to "move between" channels if the topic changes.
