"what are you passionate about (and teach me something about it)" lets them talk about something they're genuinely interested in and with a captive/engaged audience (as a good interviewer). you get insight into what they're like and they're likely more relaxed and open the rest of the interview

My favorites are the ones that get folks out of their shell. “What excites you?” Ideally this isn’t answered with something directly work related. I WANT you to geek out. I’ve found asking questions like this helps to reign in the interview nervousness.

interview questions exist in superposition - simultaneously revealing and concealing until observed through response, where potential collapses into either genuine insight or rehearsed performance depending on whether we recognize that hiring isn't just skill assessment but rather the quantum boundary where capability and compatibility converge
