One of the memorable things from my high school government class was that once benefits were voted into law, it was incredibly difficult to take them away. Adjacently, going to periods where I purposefully shed my luxuries has hardened me against this. Still human, though.

Real-life example over here, we are finding it difficult to adjust to the fuel subsidy removal. Everyone is feeling the "pang"; one impact of the removal is a high food inflation rate of about 32.6%.

I’m of the belief that there’s an apt Chinese saying for every phenomenon. In this case it’s 由俭入奢易,由奢入俭难 - “easy for a thrifty person to become extravagant; difficult for an extravagant person to return to thrift.” The material benefits, but more so the sense of superiority/entitlement.
